The University of Georgia Griffin Campus has added another Double Dawg opportunity for students: a joint Bachelor of Arts (AB) and non-thesis Master of Arts (MA) program. The AB degree is the Franklin College of Arts & Science’s Interdisciplinary Studies (Griffin Campus) program that allows students to choose a concentration in either Psychology or Sociology, and the MA is the School of Social Work’s program in Nonprofit Management and Leadership (NML).  This Double Dawg program will allow students enrolled in the Griffin Campus’ AB in Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS) program to accelerate their progress toward a master’s degree by taking graduate-level coursework as part of their undergraduate studies.

Students of Dr. Margie Paz, senior lecturer in the Department of Microbiology of the UGA Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, recently fulfilled a service-learning activity related to their Introduction to Microbiology Laboratory (MIBO 3510L) class.  They talked with students that attend Griffin High School about different fields of study in microbiology, as well as career paths, and college life on the UGA Griffin Campus.  It was an educational experience that aimed to provide UGA-Griffin students with an opportunity to gain enhanced learning, a broader appreciation of microbiology, and a sense of civic responsibility.

The University of Georgia Griffin Campus held the Fall Graduation Celebration and Brick Ceremony for the class of 2017 on Thursday, December 14, 2017 in the Stuckey Auditorium. In total, 24 students received their degrees and became alumni of the oldest state-supported university in the nation. This was the 22^nd graduation ceremony held on the Griffin Campus.  

Dr. Lew Hunnicutt, Assistant Provost and Campus Director, welcomed students, along with their families and friends, before introducing Keynote Speaker Dr. Russell Mumper, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs for UGA.

Dr. Mumper challenged the graduates to never become stagnant. Instead to keep challenging themselves, building upon their skills and accomplishments as well as being open to the possibility of change.

A group of Griffin High School biology students visited the University of Georgia Griffin Campus last week to conduct a science experiment under the direction of college students. The UGA students were fulfilling their service learning component of their “Basic Skills in the Laboratory” class, taught by Margie Paz, a senior lecturer in the microbiology department of the UGA Franklin College of Arts and Sciences.

“Participating in this service-learning activity helped the college students meet the requirement of UGA’s new experiential learning initiative, which began this semester. Every UGA undergraduate student must now participate in a hands-on, learning opportunity outside of the classroom.

The GHS students who participated in the experiment are all currently enrolled in biology classes and were selected for the experience by their teachers. The high school students performed a genetic engineering experiment using green fluorescent protein (GFP) under the supervision of the UGA Griffin students. The experiment helped the GHS students understand the scientific process involved in the GFP gene’s expression, Paz said.
