Scarecrows will visit the Garden in October!  Join in the fun to create and display a scarecrow that will publicize your business or organization, promote gardening or environmental themes, or just produce smiles!  Please register your scarecrow entry by September 25th so we can prepare for our scarecrow visitors.  Scarecrows may be set up September 28th or 29th or October 2nd. The scarecrows will be on display in the Garden through October 31st.

Scarecrows In The Garden Tips And Guidelines

All scarecrows will be displayed in the UGA Research and Education Garden between October 2nd and October 31st.  You may set up your scarecrow(s) on September 28th or 29th or on October 2nd (or at pre-arranged date, if needed).

  • Anyone can register and enter scarecrows.  Families, clubs, businesses, organizations, schools, and individuals are encouraged to participate in the fun.
  • Maximum overall dimensions must not exceed 3-8 feet tall and 3-5 feet wide.
  • All scarecrow frames must be capable of supporting the scarecrow in a freestanding manner.  We recommend PVC pipe for stability and durability.
  • The Garden will determine locations for all scarecrows and will install in-ground rebar as supports for scarecrows, allowing for PVC to slip over the support rebar.
  • Please make your scarecrow as weather-proof and durable as possible!  If there is windy or rainy weather while the scarecrows are on display, please check on your entry to see if it requires touch-ups or repair.
  • The Garden reserves the right to remove any scarecrow that deteriorates to an unacceptable level while on display.
  • The Garden is not responsible for loss or damage to scarecrows.
  • Please do not include live plant material or mulch with your display.  If you use bales of straw, please place on a tarp so that it does not create a weed or cleanup problem.
  • Entries must be suitable for viewing by all ages.  Entries reflecting political or controversial subject matter, in poor taste for family viewing (gory, scary), or overly commercial or promotional in nature will not be accepted and are subject to removal.
  • The Garden reserves the right to use photographs, contact names, and scarecrow names for publicity purposes.
  • Scarecrow set-up and take-down are the responsibility of the organization, business, family, or individual entering the scarecrow.  Set up will be on September 28th, 29th, and October 2nd between 8 am and 5 pm.  Removal and clean-up dates are November 1st through 3rd.

Scarecrows in the Garden attracts hundreds of visitors to the Garden each year.  What a great way to publicize your business or organization!  And, what a great way to “give back” to the Garden and to our community.

The Scarecrows will be on display to the public on weekdays from 8 am to 5 pm from October 2nd through October 31st.  Come out an enjoy, and please share this information with others!  We hope to secure volunteers to open the Garden on Sunday afternoons while the Scarecrows are visiting. Watch our Facebook page (UGA Research and Education Garden Events) for more information and announcements, as well as pictures of our visiting scarecrows.
